Cloud computing offers business many benefits from cost savings, security, flexibility, and sustainability to quality control, loss prevention and better disaster recovery. Which are usually the main reasons any business decides to move their IT services to the cloud.
In a world where we’re all searching for ways to reduce the damage we impose on the environment; whether that’s from recycling and reusing or choosing to buy products that are labeled eco-friendly, how can switching to the cloud help reduce our business’ CO2 footprint?
Adopting a cloud compute and storage solution can reduce the emissions of running applications – by 90%+ for smaller deployments – when compared with use of on-premises infrastructure.
Microsoft, Azure & Google
The three cloud service leaders have published their research to showcase the environmental benefits of cloud computing:
- Microsoft states that: “Microsoft cloud is between 22 and 93% more energy efficient than traditional enterprise datacenters, depending on the specific comparison being made. When taking into account our renewable energy purchases, the Microsoft cloud is between 72 and 98% more carbon efficient.” Note: the larger the deployment, the lesser the benefit.
- AWS claims that “running business applications on AWS, rather than on-premises enterprise datacenters in Europe, could reduce associated energy usage by nearly 80% and carbon emissions by up to 96% for many businesses when AWS purchases 100% of its energy from renewable sources.”
- Google claims that its datacenters are “2x more efficient than a typical enterprise datacenter.”
Cloud datacenters save energy because they achieve very high virtualization ratios, typically on newer, more efficient equipment than used in on-premises set ups. And they increasingly use very high (in some cases 100%) renewable energy.
Switch to a Cloud PBX
By moving commonly used software to the cloud, according to a paper funded by Google; energy usage could decrease by up to 87%. So why not start with your PBX? Get rid of all the wires and the dedicated server as well as other proprietary hardware such as gateways or even IP Phones.
Reduce your business’ CO2 footprint while at the same time experiencing multiple benefits such as reduced costs, easier management, less maintenance and more collaboration features for your teams. It’s a win-win!
