In the last 10 days we’ve see two major outages occur for Telstra. These outages affected millions of Telstra users especially in the NSW and Queensland regions. While Telstra has apologised for the inconvenience caused, what was the cause of the outage?
According to Telstra’s announcements the outage was caused by a planned update which didn’t go to plan and as a result had flow-on effects. In addition to this, the text message system that goes out a week prior to an upgrade experienced some glitch and as a result the message was never sent.
Whatever the reasons, the results were that millions of people were left without a land line and the ability to communicate with colleagues and customers. However, triple-0 numbers and data were not affected.
What’s to be learnt
A plethora of businesses were affected by the outage. Without the ability to communicate with the outside world and for customers and stakeholders to contact them you can imagine the frustration, irritation and time wasted for these businesses.
What can we take away from the whole experience though? If your business does not already use a cloud-based PBX with intuitive and integrated VoIP apps now is the time to seriously evaluate your options and make the switch to VoIP telephony.
Throughout the Telstra outage mobile data was working, therefore, if your business is using enterprise VoIP apps and a cloud-PBX you’ll never be out of touch or miss an important call again! No matter who has an outage or which glitches may occur with your telco provider.
